Useful support without assuming a representative's role
Official guidance describes the ordinary McKenzie Friend role as providing moral support, taking notes, helping with case papers and quietly giving advice. The court controls the assistance permitted in an individual case.
No automatic right to address the court
A McKenzie Friend does not automatically have a right of audience. Any permission is a matter for the court in the individual case.
Do not sign for the litigant
The litigant remains responsible for their case and documents. A McKenzie Friend should not sign documents on their behalf.
